Writing a gym routine in a training notebook

How to build a routine you actually stick to

GymGoat

Everyone is motivated in the first week. The people who get results are the ones still turning up in week twelve. That's not willpower. It's a routine that's built to survive bad days.

1. Start smaller than you think

Three sessions a week you'll actually do beats six you'll quit. You can always add more once the habit is locked in.

2. Fix the when, not just the what

"I'll go this week" doesn't happen. "Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 6pm" does. Put it in your calendar like any other appointment.

3. Remove the friction

Pack your bag the night before. Leave your kit out. Pick a gym on your route home. Every small barrier you remove is one less excuse on a tired day.

4. Have a plan for every session

Walking in without a plan is how you end up scrolling between machines. Write down your exercises, sets and reps before you go.

5. Plan for the bad days

You will miss sessions. What matters is the next one. Have a "minimum session" for days when energy is low: twenty minutes, a couple of big lifts. Showing up for twenty minutes keeps the habit alive.

6. Track it

Seeing your numbers go up is the best motivation there is. Log every session and look back every month.

Motivation gets you started. A routine keeps you going. Build the system and let it carry you.
